Sometimes you find an Instagram account that is still very different from the others and yet extremely inspiring. I had this with Christopher MacDonald who I found about 2 years ago and follow him ever since. Christopher is managing the London boutique for the famous cufflink-makers Deakin & Francis from Birmingham. And this is perhaps why he shows in his style how jewellery can add fantastic touches to the outfit of a gentleman. Beautiful cufflinks, rings, watches, tie pins and watch chains are coming by on the feed of Christopher MacDonald and all paired with fine suits, shirts and ties often from British makers like for example Turnbull & Asser and Benson & Clegg. For me the style of Christopher MacDonald is what I associate with the area of St. James’s in London. The highlight of his style came when I asked him to send me a photo for this interview. I got the photo that you see which he described as his take on Scottish dress. Which I think is a very nice one. I’m happy Christopher took the time to answer the ‘’17 questions to a well-dressed man’’ of which you can find the answers below. And if you happen to be in London, go and say hello to Christopher in the Deakin & Francis boutique which is in the beautiful Piccadilly Arcade.

What are you wearing today?

Grey two piece suit from Benson and Clegg

Hawes and Curtis blue shirt with Turnbull and Asser tie and handkerchief.

Loake Monk shoes, New and Lingwood red socks.

Vintage Cartier Paris platinum Tonneau.

Deakin and Francis white gold cufflinks

And that is as far as I go!

If you had to choose to spend money either on a suit or on a watch, what would you choose?

So difficult! Probably a watch, looking for a good vintage Piaget, from before 1990.

What jewellery could a man wear?

Anything he wants! I am totally against “having” to wear, or not wear things because some idiot in a magazine says you shouldn't. The journalist is only jealous he doesn't own whatever it is anyway.

Tie or a bowtie?

Tie for day, bow tie for evenings….only!

Do you remember your first jacket?

When I was 11 I had my first suit tailored to attend an army parade my father was in command of, remember I REALLY felt I was the dogs bollocks, excuse the colloquialism. That feeling of wearing a well fitting, well made garment for the first time is one of the best

What is your favourite watch?

Tough one, probably the Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet, or the original Golden Ellipse by Patek Philippe with the cobalt blue dial.

Fountain pen or ballpoint?

Love fountain pens and their classic slowness, but speed occasionally needs a pesky ballpen too.

Have you found the perfect garment yet?

Does it exist?

Explain your biggest passion in one sentence?

Cufflinks due to their limitless variety, genuine miniature works of art.

What is your guilty pleasure?

An unshared bottle of Chateau Hosanna 2005

Who is the best dressed man in the world for you?

Every man who makes the effort to be individual deserves this accolade.

The best book you ever read?

Phantastes, written by my Great Great Grandfather, George MacDonald

Which city should one go shopping?

Paris for chicness, London for choice and New York for the buzz, you can see I'm a traditionalist.

Tweed or flannel?

Tweed

The most elegant restaurant in the world for you?

L’Espadon in the Ritz, Paris, Oswalds Club in London

Describe your style in three words?

Clash with dash

Best purchase you did in the last 6 months?

I love EBay, and recently found a vintage pair of Deakin and Francis gold and sapphire cufflinks that were beautiful AND a bargain.

You can tell I have Scottish roots.
