Hubegger - Animal ties from Vienna
Who has ever been in Cordings in London or in Holland & Holland in the same city must have fallen in love with the tie tables over there. These tie tables full of ties that are having patterns with little ducks, pheasants, dogs, fishes, elephants and so on. Those ties usually made out of a woven silk can be very colorful or just very calm. They are ties that every gentleman should have at least a couple of in his wardrobe since they fit to everything from a blazer, a suit to a tweed jacket. It fits to an unmistakable classic look that finds it’s origin in Great Britain, where most of the menswear classics are originating from anyway. But originating doesn’t mean the only source and the best. For animal ties I have found a source in the Austrian capital that is keeping me happy for a while now.
My secret Viennese source for animal ties
When I was at a bespoke tailor in Vienna some years ago and checked out his tie table I noticed a lot of nice animal ties that I immediately felt in love with. I couldn’t remember seeing such a large variety of animal ties outside of Britain before and so I had to ask this tailor where he sourced them from. While expecting Britain or Italy I got to hear that he got them from a supplier just 5 miles away from his shop. This supplier was the company Hubegger who are having an impressive amount of years with experience in the tie business but were for me till then fairly unknown.
Decades ago Hubegger was started in the city center of Vienna as a tie shop where people could walk in and order ties ‘’made to order’’. One chose a fabric, told the measurements the tie should have and one day later or sometimes even the same day they could pick up the tie. This business started to grow and soon other tailors, shirtmakers and retailers in the city of Vienna where informing to the possibilities of selling the Hubegger ties in their own shops. This eventually happened and slowly the shop disappeared to switch over to a wholesale business in creating and making ties and scarves for the high end retailers, tailors and shirtmakers in Austria, Germany and a bit of the Benelux. It remained a family business till the present day as it is leaded now by Romy Hubegger and her daughter Daniela Hubegger.
They are both working on a variety of collections like; Hubegger Land which is a collection of ties and scarves that fit to the traditional Austrian national way of dressing ‘’Trachten’’. Then there is a collection called Hubegger Donna where you find some amazing big silk scarves that every woman is dreaming of all her life. And the one that I want to put in the spotlights in this writing is Hubegger Uomo, but in particular the variety of animal ties that Hubegger offers.
The Viennese dachshund tie
One of these iconic patterns that Hubegger designed their selves, and which is my all time favorite, is the Viennese dachshund. As many of you may know Vienna is my absolute favorite city and I can’t get enough of it ever. I visited the city very often, read all the history about it and even listen often the music from the typical Viennese singers like for example Peter Alexander. The latter had a typical Viennese song he has been singing called ‘’Wenn Ich mit meinem Dackel’’ or translated ‘’When I’m with my dachshund.’’ . He sings there about a walk he makes with his dachshund in Grinzing, the wine area of Vienna. Whether this song made the dachshund a symbol of Vienna or not is unknown even for me. But a fact is that the dachshund is a symbol of Austria’s capital and that even till today the elegant women and men of the city are strolling over the Ringstrassen and in the parks with their beautiful dachshunds.
Of course also at Hubegger they are fond of the dachshund and it’s role in Vienna. Therefor they decided to create the Viennese dachshund tie which is becoming the sartorial souvenir of Vienna lately. The tie is red which is of course the color of Austria and a beautiful bronze dachshund is woven into the fabric. Standing the most beautiful he can and smiling everybody who looks at the tie. The tie can be found at some great Viennese sartorial institutions like for example Wilhelm Jungmann & Neffe but also smaller tailors and retailers in the city are selling this ideal sartorial souvenir from the Austrian capital. It is an animal tie that stands apart from the rest and will always remind you of Vienna.
Of course the other patterns from Hubegger are beautifully detailed as well and if you are looking for animal ties it is not such a crazy idea to make your way to Vienna or find a retailer who is offering the wide variety of Hubegger ties. For some directions you can always e-mail Hubegger who will be glad to guide you.
